| January Practical Pistol Shoot - Mid Season Report | ||
|
Hi everyone how was your New Year. For various reasons we have not been sending out our semi-regular newsletter. I thought I would put this one together to inform all those shooters who do not have e-mail. So far the Practical Pistol season has gone well. We started in October and have had an average of 14-16 shooters from 3 different Post attend each match. Palatine Post 690 is our newest addition to our shoots , bringing the total amount of Posts attending to 7 (Roselle, Wheaton, Wood Dale, Lombard , Hinsdale, Naperville, and Palatine). We have increased the shooter participation level by having the shooters form squads which set up and score their own targets. This has eliminated all down time because everyone has a job to do. It has also really sped things up leaving plenty of time at the end of the shoot for practice. Below and on the following pages you will see all the scores starting with October 04 and the team rankings. We have posted this information on our web site and sent it to those with e-mail addresses on file. If you would like to access this information on the Internet just go to our website www.post1084.org and click on shooting sports, or send me a request via e-mail and I will put you on our e-mailing list. My e-mail is dhendrickson1@outdrs.net . If that does not go through check the website for a new addres |

VERY IMPORTANT!!!!!!!! I have found an instructor with open dates prior to 1/05. these are the available dates... 11-28, 12-12, & 12-19 We can hold the instructor course at Roselle Post 1084 using air guns. We must contact the instructor ASAP. The pistol course is the shortest (10hrs) and we should do that one first. Please contact me immediately so that we can schedule this. Our BIT certifications expire at the end of 04. This course would be open to anyone who has had NRA Basic Instructor Training, and anyone who has an NRA Certified instructor in another disipline (ie, Rifle, Shotgun, etc.) and would like to add Pistol Instructor to their Credentials. |

The Practical Pistol season is upon us! Our first Practical Pistol Shoot will be held on Thursday, Oct. 14th, 6:00PM, at Gun World in Bensenville IL. We have been doing this for several years with a 100% perfect safety record and excellent attendance. Anyone age 13 or older is welcome to attend. Junior shooters age 20 and under are restricted to .22 cal handguns until they have classified as sharpshooter or above, then any caliber pistol is allowed. For adults, any caliber and type of handgun is allowed. If you don't have a handgun but are interested in attending, loaners are available for $10.00 including ammo. This is a fun shoot with emphasis on safety and marksmanship, and has educated many shooters both young and old alike. The Practical Pistol Shoots will be held on the 2nd Thursday of the month from October through April. If attendance increases as expected, we will add a second shoot to each month to handle the volume. The next Family Fun Shoot will be held on Sunday, October 24th. These shoots are outdoors and use rifles to educate juniors and entertain adults. We always have several historical military rifles on hand for shooters to try and a bunch of .22 rifles for the juniors to use. Depending on range availability, the shoot will be held at either Buffalo Range inc. in Ottawa, IL. Or at the Sycamore Sportsmen's and Conservation Club in Sycamore IL. So if you are interested in firing a 1903 Springfield, M1 Garand, M-14, or AR15, or if you would like your children or grand children to learn firearms safety and marksmanship, just contact us to find out which range it will be at and come on down. A hot lunch will be available to attendees to fight off any chill in the air. Don't worry about the weather, it will be much better than what these battle rifles and the rifleman behind them saw during winter combat in WWI, WWII, & Korea, and at the end of the shoot everyone gets to go home. For more information regarding these shoots or joining our club, check us out on the web, e-mail me or just call and leave a message. Until next time keep your guns clean and your powder dry, and remember ALWAYS treat all firearms as if they are loaded, ALWAYS keep the muzzle pointed in a safe direction, ALWAYS keep your finger off the trigger until ready to shoot, and ALWAYS be aware of what is beyond your target! The first Practical Pistol Shoot of the season had fifteen shooters from three different Posts in attendance. A big welcome goes to our new shooters from Palatine Post 690 and Wheaton Post 76. This first shoot was a practice shoot and it's purpose was to wring out a new scoring system that requires all shooters to be apart of the process. This new system was a little awkward at first but with a few tweaks, should prove to be more efficient. We have added Shooter Classifications, and class sub categories to the mix as well, and they are as such; |

I hope everyone likes the new system as it gives a chance for everyone to be top of their class. The team names are not final as of yet and as you can see we had a team with members from multiple Posts. It would be great if we could figure on at least 4 regular teams and 2 fill in teams every month. If your team is short we will still use your team name and just add a fill in shooter to your team to bring it up to 4 shooters, but we will not average team scores to make up for teams short on shooters (as in the case of the Post 1084 Leftovers, their team score was affected by the lack of a 4th shooter). It is important for shooters to fill out the score sheet completely, we probably had more shooters in the Senior class but there was no way I would put someone in a class if I'm not sure (after all, the offended shooter will be armed at the next shoot!), if you want to be listed in a class let me know. In order to save time at our shoots, I would like all shooters to send me the following information so that I can pre-print labels to put on your score card. This will save you time and save me time trying to decipher poor penmenship (no offense to anyone, but the spaces are small and sometimes it is very hard to read the info).

Hey everybody, are you ready for the
Practical Pistol Shoots to begin? I hope so. At last night's meeting we
have chosen the dates for the 2004/2005 Practical Pistol season. These
dates still have to be confirmed with Gun World but most likely they
will be the ones. Everyone needs to keep the 2nd
Thursday of the month open. Our first shoot will be on
Thursday, October 14th, 2004, 6:00PM SHARP!. Yes we
know that is only a couple of weeks but we all have been busy. This
first shoot will be a practice shoot so that we can work the bugs out of
some new procedures. These new procedures will help our shoots run more
smoothly and safer. Shooters will be grouped into 4 man squads/teams and
each squad will be doing their own scoring and target setup. As popular
as the shoots have become we may have hold the shoot twice a month.
Everyone would be able to shoot at both monthly shoots but only one
month would be for record. We will know if we are going to implement
this after the first 2 or 3 shoots. Due to limited space we must ask
that shooters arrive to the range as punctual as possible, we will only
allow 24 shooters per match. 4 man Teams will have priority, followed by
Post 1084 Shooting Sports club members and then followed by non-members.
If you have not joined the club yet, you definatly need to consider it
this year. All certified RSO's are requested to be of assistance this
year, we need to spread the load around. If you have forgotten, the cost
to attend these shoots are;
|
||
|
Post 1084 Shooting Sports Club Members-------------$10.00
Non-Members--------------------------------------------$15.00
Juniors (age 13-20)--------------------------------------$5.00
There may also be a one time team fee
which would cover team trophy expenses if we decide to do so. We will
decide about the team fee after the October shoot.
|
||
|
The October Family Fun Shoot
will be held on Sunday,Oct 24th, 10:00AM. If you have
not attended one of these shoots you are missing alot of fun. There is
no scoring and no rules (except obvious safety rules). We just go out to
have fun. We Bring out some Historical military rifles for adults and
older juniors to try and plenty of rimfire .22's for the juniors to
shoot. we have not decided on the range yet, Buffalo Range in Ottawa may
be open by then and if it is we will shoot there, otherwise it will be
at the Sycamore Sportsmens Club in Sycamore. We will let you know when
we know. We hope to see you all soon.

Our 3rd annual Family Fun Shoots are about to begin! This year we are starting them a little late because we needed to find a range to hold them. Buffalo Rock Range in Ottawa IL is closed until September so John Graeff of Sqd. 76 went on a search for a replacement range and found Sycamore Sportsmen's club in Sycamore IL. The first Family Fun Shoot will be held on Sunday July 25th. At this shoot you will get a chance to fire military rifles from WW I through the present and Juniors and new shooters will receive instruction in firearms safety and marksmanship. Many of the Juniors will be upgrading their marksmanship qualifications. If you are interested or know someone that may be interested in attending please contact me. For all you Legion Family members out there with children, grand children, or great-grand children, remember that it is your responsibility to teach them firearms safety! Even if there are no firearms in your home they should still have this life saving knowledge instilled in them. Odds are sooner or later they will be in the vicinity of a firearm; make sure they know what to do. If you are interested in enlisting them in a Firearms Safety Course or a Basic Marksmanship Course just let us know. The Civilian Marksmanship Program has just received a shipment of M1 Garand Rifles that have been returned by Greece, these rifles had been on loan to Greece by the U.S. Government. These rifles are in several conditions and are priced very reasonably. The least expensive "Rack Grade" is $295.00. That is a heck of a good price for a functioning piece of history! "Service Grade" and "Collector Grades" are also available. These rifles will go fast so if you want one (or 5) act quickly. There are a few qualifications that must be met in order to purchase rifles through the CMP, one of them is you must be a member of a CMP affiliated club. Luckily for you the Post 1084 Shooting Sports Club is affiliated with the CMP and with a small donation of $15.00 you can be a member, allowing you to purchase that 1903 Springfield, 1917 Enfield, or M1 Garand that you always wanted. You will also receive a $5.00 discount at our Practical Pistol Shoots to boot! For more information regarding the Shooting Sports Club and it’s programs, just drop us a line.
